HazMat Release from Barrell Craft Spirits!! 13yr Canadian Rye. Unicorn Alert!!

Unicorn alert… Single Barrel from Barrell Craft Spirits… 13yr Rye… Barrel L943, bottle #100… this clocks in at a HazMat 145.2 proof.  When I saw this, I grabbed a few… don’t think I’ll ever come across a Barrell HazMat again and I strongly regret not getting enough of the ECBP 140.2 proof back when I could…

Nose… the moment you pop the cork the nose jumps out at you–before even pouring the glass.  You can tell this is Canadian… maple syrup and vanilla rock candy permeates the room.  With the whiskey is the glass I’m also getting Necco wafers, heavy cream, butterscotch and gingerbread houses.  The crazy part is, I’m not getting much burn here on the nose, and this is HazMat!

The mouthfeel is great, completely oily covering the whole mouth.  There is decent heat and you can tell it’s not bottled in bond, but it’s enjoyable and balanced.  There is a strong tannin structure that goes right through the center and the finish builds up momentum with more and more flavor coming through.  This is a two to three minute finish.

In one way this is very different than any of the other Barrell releases I’ve had before… but it’s also consistent with quality and nuance and putting out really good whiskies, straight from the barrel.  If you can find this on the shelf, do not hesitate to grab it (or two or three!).  Finding HazMat whiskies that are good are extremely hard to find, and this is one of them.  Will be something that probably just goes up in value due to scarcity, but if you find them, grab two, so you can still open one.  I will probably open another one once this is gone… It’s worth it!  96/100.

JP Wisers Rare Cask Series: Seasoned Oak

Special release from Canada… came out almost a year ago but I just tried it the other day after grabbing one on my last trip to Canada. 19yrs old rye finished in 48 month old seasoned oak staves. For a really good review, check out Mark Bylok’s piece, link at the bottom.

Spicy nose, cinnamon sticks, rock candy, decent heat but also some pine needles and menthol in the back.

Very unique mouthfeel… oily texture up front and then it tickles the tongue right down the middle. The tannins stick to the center of the tongue and no where else in the mouth which is really interesting. It has both a velvety texture down the middle but a jagged edge along the outside as well. There is decent heat that actually builds up, which is less than ideal. It’s a strange whiskey but so interesting.

Many people talk about balanced whiskies. I’m not sure this one is, but it’s also really good in its own way. This is one of the rare release projects from Wisers and it makes sense. This whiskey has a great up front mouthfeel and tongue tannins but has more heat than it should at the Proof and taste falls off at the end, too early and short of a finish to push it into the higher end. This is one that everyone should try, and worth picking up at the LCBO at retail, but not worth seeking out on secondary. It also is much better after cracking it for a couple days, the first pour was not great. 90/100

Gooderham & Worts Eleven Souls: A Masterful Blend

This year’s special release Northern Border collection from Gooderham & Worts is a Four Grain Whiskey aged in eleven different types of casks and bottled at 49% abv.

Nice looking bottle, easy to remove cork and decently medium amber color for a Canadian Whiskey.

Really unique nose, dried peaches, dried cranberry, toffee, Honey Nut Cheerios, graham cracker crust and Christmas cookies. A touch of heat but not too much on the nose.

Very sweet on the palate with just enough warmth to let you know it’s there but smooth enough to know it’s been aged enough. The mouthfeel has lots of grip down the center of the tongue but not over enveloping to start. The finish builds throughout, never dropping or getting bitter. Very enjoyable taste.

Last year’s G&W was enjoyable but not spectacular, I think this year’s may be the best of the lot. Completely different than any other Canadian Whiskey I’ve ever had and I love it. It’s subtle though, not an overpower bomb like Lot 40 Cask Strength was last year nor as epic as Wisers 35, but this is a testament to amazing blenders that can create something epic proving 1+1=3. Well done! 94/100.

Canadian Club 41 Chronicles Review

Released at c$300 and was readily available for several weeks at the LCBO, Canadian Club 41yr is the oldest release ever. Bottled at 90 Proof, it is in the same shape squarish bottle from last year.

Pricey? Yes, but it’s 41 years! Imagine the amount of evaporation. So the question is whether it’s the same as last year. You are about to find out.

The nose is much bigger than last year with a sherry bomb coming out and dried figs and baking spices coming through. Much bolder than last year’s release.

The mouthfeel is decent, not overpowering. The heat is mild and the finish moderate. This is an enjoyable whiskey but not epic.

I think I prefer last year’s pure version versus this one which clearly takes advantage of the 9.09% rule and feels like there is a lot of sherry influence. Still wonderful and worth picking up a couple at the LCBO if you were able to. 91/100.

Quick Review: Boss Hog V

I do like a good presentation. The coffin isn’t for Dave but for the pet pig Mortimer. RIP.

Pears, maple syrup, graham crackers and moderate heat permeate the nose. Rich dark color in the glass.

Big mouthfeel, completely covers everything in the mouth. A bit more heat than I would have liked, but mellows quickly into a nice hug. The finish is very long and sweet throughout. Complex flavors of sweetness, dried fruit and spice on the follow through.

This is a lovely whiskey.  Is it worth $500 retail though? I also like to run expensive ryes through the Handy test, is it better?  The answer is no, but it’s darn close and different. Like all my reviews, price is a factor in my reviews.  If this was $100 it might be a contender for whiskey of the year, but at $500, there are too many I’d rather have in the 200-400 range like GTS, THH, BCS gray label and more… it’s still lovely and unique and totally recommended for trying at a bar; only buy it if $500 is no big deal to you. 94.5/100

Lot 40 Cask Strength 2018 Release

This is the second year of the Lot 40 Cask Strength Limited release, coming in at 11 years and 58.4% abv after last year’s 12yr and 55%.image2(4)

First note that hit me was candied orange peel when I first opened this bottle. After some air the orange nose is still present but isn’t overpowering as you get follow through aromas of rock candy, Christmas spices, anise and burned brown sugar in butter sauce.

Really big mouth feel and a lot of heat, much more than the nose suggested. To some this might be too hot and spicy but I enjoyed it, but I’d prefer it not be this sharp and jagged; it probably could have used an extra year in bottle.   Maybe last year’s 12 years was the right number? The finish is long but again, pretty hot to start but does end in a nice lingering sweet and spicy completion—the long and non-bitter finish really is the highlight of the dram. Great mouthfeel and very complex.

This is a really enjoyable rye and a wonderful special release from Lot 40 following up from last year’s incredible first edition. However last year’s was so crazy good the anticipation of this one was so high and it just didn’t quite reach last hear. Last year got a 96 and this one is still good but gets 94/100.

Last year was released at C$60, and this one has been increased to C$100. Still worth it at retail, but if you are looking for secondary, try to find Batch 1 instead.

Top 21 Complaints/Arguments/Issues My Wife has with my Bourbon Hobby

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  Today I’m very thankful for my healthy family, my job and my bourbon collection.  My wife is less thankful about my Bourbon hobby and I jotted down the top 21 issues we have… My hope is that this will provide some comfort, laughs and solidarity with those who are going through the same problems.  Everyone likes to know that they aren’t the only ones with these issues… if I forgot any, add them in the comments!  Thank you for reading.   1. Constantly negotiating how many liquor stores we can stop at when going on family trips or drives to any new area…
  2. Excessive packing material, boxes, popcorn, bubble wrap in my home office, closet, everywhere…
  3. Having to rescue perfectly shaped bourbon shipping boxes from the trash that are former Amazon.com boxes… then see #2
  4. Any errands that I go on my own often take 2-3x longer than normal due to unforeseen liquor store stops…
  5. Most stops only take 2-3 minutes, but every once in a while you hit a honey pot and that can take 20-30 minutes to negotiate with the owner and find all the good stuff, and you can guarantee by the time you get back to the car, both kids are melting down and you have a dozen nasty texts to hurry up…
  6. Having too many bottles in general being accused of being a hoarder, or obsessive, etc…
  7. Empty Glencairn glasses littered around the house on bookshelves, ledges, etc…
  8. Going to restaurants or bars together and me complaining about either having a bad selection or overpricing the good stuff…
  9. I will decline restaurant selections she suggests if the bourbon collection or bad or if they do not do wine corkage for free or at a reasonable price…
  10. She thinks it’s weird that I bring sample bottles or flasks of good stuff to family weddings or events that I know will be lacking on the quality…
  11. Roadies…. she hates that….
  12. Do I even need to mention how much I spend on bottles?  To be fair, 1/2 of it I trade or sell, or at least that’s what I tell her… 🙂
  13. Constantly taking long inhale smells with my nose deep in a Glencairn glass… she thinks it’s silly.
  14. She hates that I display empty bottles… I mean, can anyone actually recycle their old BTAC bottles?  I can’t.
  15. Whenever her brother comes over, it automatically becomes a Bourbon tasting event with at least ten Glencairn glasses…
  16. Late at night packing bottles to ship makes a lot of noise with the tape gun… lots of shushing around that one…
  17. My home office basically looks like a liquor store or bar… but a REALLY good bar!  Jack Rose is what I’m striving for here…
