The Hits Just Keep on Coming… Barrell Bourbon Batch 012

Batch 12 is the most recent release from Barrell Bourbon, just off the heels of their best Bourbon of the year award from San Francisco Ultimate Spirits (http://www.fredminnick.com/2017/04/27/shocking-whiskey-upsets-17-san-fran-world-spirits-comp/). I also was a huge fan of Batch 011 (link). I think I have a future as a spirits judge…

Batch 12 is quite a bit older than 11 coming in at 9 years, but is lower proof, 108.5. I’m not sure, but this might be the lowest proof they have ever released.

The nose on this one is completely different than any previous batch I have tried. This one is a complete fruit bomb: plums, dried cherries, orange peel, hints of graham cracker and brioche. Very little heat on the nose.

Great oils and tannins on the mouthfeel with a wonderful spiciness I didn’t get first on the nose. Getting the fruit and more on the palate. Warmer than expected, in a good way.  The finish is at least two minutes long.

This is a really solid follow up to Batch 011. While most of the stores I go to have sold out of Batch 011, if you buy 012, you won’t be disappointed. It might be enjoyed even more by people who don’t like their Bourbon at 135 proof–probably is more approachable to most whiskey consumers. 94/100.

Barrell Bourbon Batch 10

Batch 10 is not the newest release from Barrell Bourbon, but one the newer side–I actually got 011 before I got 010.  Eight years of age, 122 proof, Straight Bourbon Whiskey and distilled in Indiana.  I think we all know what Indiana means, and most of the time I’ve really enjoyed the products that have come out of everyone’s favorite behind the scenes distiller.

Like all previous Barrell releases, this one comes in their beautiful bottle and has a nice golden amber color.

Strong nose with medium heat, butterscotch, graham crackers, pencil shavings, honeydew melon, tart dark cherries and honey.

The taste is great.  The mouthfeel is thick, chewy, strong and enjoyable.  I’m sick of thin “cask strength” whiskies, and this is powerful with so many layers.  The tannins, oil, and complexity really make this finish go on for a very long time.  I clocked the second taste at 3 minutes and didn’t drop off.  That doesn’t happen often.

So… I know a lot of readers are going to say: “Hey, it’s Indiana, so it’s MGP, so who cares?”  Well… I think what the best thing about Barrell Bourbon so far is that they have an uncanny ability to pick the right barrels.  I’m sure a lot of brands that source whiskey just take whatever they can get their hands on.  It’s very clear that Barrell Craft Spirits is much more picky.  The barrels they picked up this time made one helluva batch for #10.  95/100.

Newest Barrell Bourbon Batch is a Home Run: 011

Let’s just get to the review… Iconic Barrell Bottle, this is the 11th Bourbon release.  This one, and I’m pulling the details right from their website (http://www.barrellbourbon.com/bourbonbatches) is: Straight Bourbon Whiskey​, Distilled and aged in Tennessee, Crafted and bottled in Kentucky, 114.8 proof cask strength bottling, Aged for 6 years in American oak barrels, and Mash bill: 70% corn, 25% rye, 5% malted barley.

The aroma jumps out of the glass with Honey Nut Cheerios, Jif, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, chocolate chip pancakes with maple syrup with a side of cinnamon toast.  You can feel the heat, but the warmth is a secondary factor that adds, rather than subtracts to the experience.

WOW.  The mouthfeel is incredible, and all the flavors on the nose are coming in really strongly through the mouth and the finish just goes on and on.  The warmth on your chest after the first taste makes you know this is a barrel proof whiskey, but only adds to the experience, and is the background to the flavor.  This Bourbon has a several minute finish with the oils and tannins following through.  You don’t even need to add a drop of water to this, it’s perfect the way it is.

This might just be my favorite Barrell Bourbon release since Batch 006.  This is one I’m going to stockpile.  I still love that the rest of the world hasn’t yet caught on to this brand, so you can still find a bottle of these at the store for under $100.  Still the best limited release cask strength product under $100 on the market.  98/100.

Jefferson’s Buffalo Trail TTB Request Spurs Excitement, Lawsuits and Curiosity

Jefferson’s Bourbon has just submitted a new TTB request for a very unique new Bourbon: the Jefferson’s Buffalo Trail Bourbon.  Partnering with Ted Turner, the owner of the largest Buffalo herd in North America, Jefferson’s has developed a unique proprietary saddle that will attach two 10 gallon barrels to an adult buffalo, part of Turner’s Buffalo herd, as they migrate across the Montana Buffalo Trail.

Turner said, “When Trey (Zoeller) approached me about this unique opportunity to involve my herd in one of my favorite other passions, Bourbon, how could I not gallop at the opportunity?” Trey Zoeller, founder of Jefferson’s Bourbon, is always looking to push the envelope of new aging techniques after developing Jefferson’s Ocean.  Zoeller commented that he “was extremely excited about Turner’s enthusiasm for the joint venture to create a unique Bourbon product.  We hope power, American Spirit and wooliness of the American Buffalo will transferred into the barrels in the saddle for the public to enjoy.”

However, not everyone is excited for this new product.  A representative from the ASPCA commented that they were very concerned for the welfare of the Buffalo involved and believed the saddle to hold the Bourbon barrels constituted animal cruelty: “how would you like to have two full whiskey barrels strapped to you during a 500 mile journey!”

In addition to the ASPCA, an unnamed source at a Louisville, KY based law firm leaked to the press that Sazerac Co. is preparing to file suit against Zoeller and Jefferson’s for trademark infringement because it is too close to their Buffalo Trace brand.  When asked for comment, Zoeller said “tell Goldring to bring his best, because as far as I know, he doesn’t have any real Buffalo involved in his brand, and we do.  If he wants to sue us too, he can see me in court!”

Zoeller says he will partner with select retailers to product a cask strength single barrel limited release version in two years if the first trail run is successful, but for the Fall they will be releasing an expected 4,000-5,000 barrels of the Jefferson’s Buffalo Trail #1 at 100 proof, non-chill filtered.  We at newbourbondrinker are looking forward to trying the new expression and would love to try a sample when it is available.

I Dipped It Myself! Maker’s 46 Cask Strength

Part of my trip to Kentucky several months ago included trip to Loretto to do the Maker’s tour.  At the end of the tour I bought a couple bottles and dipped them myself.  Maker’s Mark does one of the best tours of any distillery and is a must do for those making the trip to KY.  It’s a little out of the way, but totally worth it.  For now, Maker’s 46 Cask Strength is only available in the gift shop, but I’m told that will change soon.

Lots of baking spices: vanilla, cinnamon, allspice on the nose, raisin bread, mesquite chips and pencil shavings. Not too hot on the nose, good for a 110.7 proof Bourbon.

The palate is enjoyable, nice chew, decent oils, moderate and warm finish.  The spices come through strongly tickling the tongue, but the finish drops off.

Definitely one of the best tours on the tour, but not the best bourbon.  I prefer the original Maker’s to the 46, and the cask 46 is just more of it.  Enjoyable certainly, but nothing that’s a must try.  86/100.

Wild Turkey Rare Breed

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Wild Turkey’s Rare Breed from friends in the bourbon community, yet for some reason I never tried it… until now.  Widely available, barrel proof, uncut, Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey… what’s not to love?

Nice looking bottle, medium amber color.

Hot nose, ginger snap cookies, baking spices, dried orange peels, cooked mushrooms and forest floor.

Enjoyable mouthfeel.  Light tannins, medium oils, totally enveloping.  The heat is still strong, yet the finish is medium length but dries out and becomes slightly bitter.

For a cask strength bourbon, it’s certainly hard to find one under $50 (at least now that Booker’s is going up in price).  But from the ones that are readily available on the shelves, like Booker’s Barrell Bourbon, single Barrel Four Roses, Rare Breed falls short of them.  I’m not sure why so many people get excited about this, but maybe it’s because they haven’t tried the other cask strength ones on the market?  Rare Breed gets extra points for the price, but once this bottle is gone, I won’t be replacing it.  84/100.

2016 BTAC George T Stagg: Proper Glassware Matters!

I first had 2016 GTS at a bar a month ago.  It wasn’t it the proper glassware, the situation wasn’t perfect, and when I tried it, I found it to be way too hot on the nose and unable to enjoy it.  When I was able to acquire one a couple days ago (thanks bottle-spot.com!) I considering flipping it, but after a few drinks, drunker heads prevailed and I opened it.  I decided that I will review it twice to see how it evolves given how high the proof is.  I also decided to do the first  review in a Norlan glass to help focus on the flavors and reduce some of the heat.

Right after opening it: the Norlan glass is amazing because I’m finding this to be not nearly as hot as I remember it in the crappy bar glass.  The color is pretty much as dark as I’ve ever seen for a bourbon.  On the nose, French toast brioche with maple syrup, buttered cinnamon toast, butterscotch, candied walnuts and subtle charcoal.  The taste is BIG.  Huge tannins, huge mouthfeel and a big amount of heat.  This is so complex, and there is so much happening on the palate.  The heat quickly dissipated leaving the oak notes, tannins and the flavors.  The finish is several minutes long finishing nicely.  When you first taste it you think that the oak tannins will overpower everything, but they integrate nicely and much better than expected in an amazing way.  This is a very special bourbon.  I’m very glad I opened this because it is nothing like when I tried it in the bar with the wrong glassware.

A couple weeks later: this time in the classic Glencairn glass… the aroma is so rich with everything from a couple weeks ago and even though not in the Norlan glass, the heat isn’t that bad.  It’s incredible what a bad bar glass will do to the experience.  The taste is huge, big tannins, big flavor, with an insane finish.  So much sweetness and spice the lingers for minutes.  This is a special bourbon.

144.1 proof, a monster, but in the right glassware, it can be tamed.  Highly recommend picking this one up if you can find it at the lower end of secondary, but given pricing these days, it’s not easy to find.  97.5/100
