Rum Curious by Fred Minnick

Before I start, let me say that I will not be switching to rum going forward–I will maintain my love and long-term devotion to Bourbon, but, as you know from some of my previous blogs, I may temporarily stray from time to time to other spirits including rum.  Everyone enjoys a little strange now and then…

Fred Minnick is a world famous whiskey journalist, in addition to being one of the best spirits judges out there.  He judges at the San Francisco Ultimate Spirits competition, and it seems that every Whiskey magazine I open, he is rating and reviewing whiskey and other spirits in them as well.  I have read all of his previous books, most recently Bourbon Curious, which is another one I highly recommend.

Perfect for summer reading, Minnick covers the history, production and regulations of Rum before jumping into the tasting and reviews.  It was a nice vacation from reading about everyone repeating what Bottled in Bond is or the requirements for a Bourbon Whiskey.  Rum has an interesting history, steeped in the evolution of the United States as a country.  One could argue that it was more important building the foundation of the country than Bourbon was.  Minnick’s writing flows well, is easy to understand, but doesn’t patronize the reader.

The reviews are interesting and educational with humor intertwined as well–I especially like when he threatens anyone making a cocktail out of any rum he rated 95 points or higher.

Below are the links to a couple rums I rated earlier… Fred and I do not agree on our ratings, I thought both were very good, however, he rated the Barrell Rum very well, but lambasted the Balcone’s Rum.  I guess I have a lot more to learn before I’m invited to be a judge at the Ultimate Spirits Competition.  Pick up your book for yourself or for your favorite Father ASAP!

Old Weller Antique Ninety 9 single barrel

Those in the know, are aware that in terms of value Wheaters OWA tops the chart. What some people may not know, is that some of the Old Weller Antique 107 single barrels are significantly better than the standard issue. This is one of those situations.

I’m not going to review it like normal, but the characteristics are the same as regular OWA, but there are subtle differences. The mouthfeel is much more interesting: it has more tannins and flavor. The finish is longer. Butterscotch, cinnamon and sugar and butter keep going. The heat is lower. Whoever picked this barrel clearly knew what they were doing.

At $34.99, this was one of best bargains of the year. If you live in CT, be sure to go to Ninety Nine and grab one of these single barrels while they are still available! 94/100

Barrell Bourbon Batch 10

Batch 10 is not the newest release from Barrell Bourbon, but one the newer side–I actually got 011 before I got 010.  Eight years of age, 122 proof, Straight Bourbon Whiskey and distilled in Indiana.  I think we all know what Indiana means, and most of the time I’ve really enjoyed the products that have come out of everyone’s favorite behind the scenes distiller.

Like all previous Barrell releases, this one comes in their beautiful bottle and has a nice golden amber color.

Strong nose with medium heat, butterscotch, graham crackers, pencil shavings, honeydew melon, tart dark cherries and honey.

The taste is great.  The mouthfeel is thick, chewy, strong and enjoyable.  I’m sick of thin “cask strength” whiskies, and this is powerful with so many layers.  The tannins, oil, and complexity really make this finish go on for a very long time.  I clocked the second taste at 3 minutes and didn’t drop off.  That doesn’t happen often.

So… I know a lot of readers are going to say: “Hey, it’s Indiana, so it’s MGP, so who cares?”  Well… I think what the best thing about Barrell Bourbon so far is that they have an uncanny ability to pick the right barrels.  I’m sure a lot of brands that source whiskey just take whatever they can get their hands on.  It’s very clear that Barrell Craft Spirits is much more picky.  The barrels they picked up this time made one helluva batch for #10.  95/100.
